Did you know that the biggest cave in the world is located in Vietnam? It is called Son Doong, which means “Mountain River Cave”. It is located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, in the green jungle of Quang Binh Province (central Vietnam).
It is so big it can fit any big cave in the world…Imagine a Boeing 747 flying through it or a huge New York skyscraper placed there!
So, what is the news you ask? In April 2019, British divers Jason Mallinson, Rick Stanton, and Chris Jewell discovered a new tunnel, which means the world’s biggest cave is even larger than we thought!
By how much? This hidden passage adds at least 1,640 feet (500 meters) or more (divers had to go back because of oxygen.) “It would be like someone found a lump on top of Mount Everest, making it higher,” Howard Limbert, one of the cave experts who helped organise the dive, told CNN.
By the way, if those British names ring a bell, that is because they played a huge part in the rescue of a football team in Thailand, known as Tham Luang cave rescue. This case will even make its way to Netflix soon!
The world is an amazing place. Son Doong cave was only discovered by accident in 1990 before being explored in 2009. And now, 10 years later, it still keeps on surprising us.
UPDATE: Son Doong was ranked as the fifth in the top 20 of greatest adventures in the world by British television channel Dave. Only Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu in Peru, the Grand Canyon in the US, and Thrihnukagigur Volcano in Iceland ranked higher!
