Halong Bay: Getting There And Around

Transportation

Visitors can access Halong Bay via a variety of transport methods, especially from Hanoi. Hotels may also offer private package deals, including transportation to the Bay, for those wishing to go on a cruise. Booking your cruise and transportation through a single agency may well prove to be the most convenient way of managing these logistics, and avoid being overwhelmed by a cacophony of offers and deals upon arrival in Halong.

By air, road or rail

Should you wish to fly, there are daily flights to Halong Bay from Danang and Ho Chi Minh City to Cat Bi airport, which is 70 km from Halong Bay.

In addition Halong City* has three long-distance bus stations for local buses;

  1. Lac Long Bus Station, closest to Halong city centre, runs services heading north out of Halong and to Hanoi.
  2. Niem Nghia Bus Station, for destinations south of Halong, such as Ninh Binh.
  3. Tam Bac Bus Station, for buses to Hanoi.

*the relevant stop for some buses in the city is located in an area called Bãi Cháy, sometimes this name is used instead of “Halong”.

Bear in mind that taking local buses has both advantages and disadvantages. It can sometimes prove challenging for those with no knowledge of Vietnamese if members of the public are unable to assist visitors. Conversely, travelling alongside locals can provide a real insight into everyday life in Vietnam.

If travelling by car (or for those fearless enough to take up the challenge of a motorbike) Halong is 103 km from Hanoi on the expressway, Hwy 5. If driving yourself, expect traffic conditions to be as chaotic as elsewhere in the country and be prepared.

Visitors can also travel by train, and a slow speed service travels to Hanoi’s Long Bien station, four times a day.
