Climate And When To Visit Vietnam

Understanding the weather in Vietnam is essential for packing! Local weather varies between the Northern, Central, and Southern regions of Vietnam. In the South, beaches are worth a visit during any season, whilst in the centre of Vietnam, the weather is a little warmer than in the North, but a little cooler than in the South.

Bear in mind that Vietnamese weather often has a cooler “real feel” because of the humidity. Temperatures can drop below 10°C in the Northern Vietnamese mountains, with the lowest recorded temperature being -3°C in 2008. Even if these temperatures might not seem extreme to all travellers, the humidity in the air gives an additional chill.

Central Vietnam weather chart

Visit Vietnam in the central region between the months of January to May. This ensures relaxation for you while the weather, too, rejuvenates from the heavy rain season that concluded in November. During the first five months of the year, the central Vietnam weather is still fresh from the abundant amount of rain that fell in the previous year as well as from the swift ocean breezes. Consequently, this provides a sunny climate that ensures warmth which will eventually simmer into a fierce heat beginning in June that is advisable to avoid.

Southern Vietnam seasons

  • Rainy season: May to September
    Dry season: October to March
  • Spring:
    Average temperature: 24 °C
  • Summer: June, July, August
    Average temperature: 30 °C
  • Fall: September, October, November
    Average temperature: 25 °C
  • Winter: December, January, February
    Average temperature: 18 °C

Generally speaking, the south has optimal beach weather all year round. To escape wicked heat levels opt to visit southern Vietnam from December to mid-February. Moonson season generally starts from May to November, with occasional downpours here and there in the afternoon. Nevertheless, the South of Vietnam is a great destination to travel throughout the year.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

March is the peak visiting season in Vietnam, with tourists flocking to every must-see destination. Although March houses favourable weather conditions, the amount of pleasure that can come from a location is hindered because of the abundance of tourists. Additionally, an advisable solution is to choose another month other than March within the months of September to April. However, if the only available option is to visit Vietnam in March, then ensure booking multiple months in advance for an optimal experience.

Each region has seasonal schedules that determine the best time to go to Vietnam based on monthly characteristics. Make sure to check it carefully for a fulfilling trip!
